Our Mission
Isaboko is a *solarpunk art and design practice founded by Asian American designer Isabella Li Kostrzewa. We are based in NYC, and design, cut, and sew all of our garments in the 5 burrows.
We are dedicated to 3 principles
-
Only use waste textiles
-
Designing with zero waste patterns and practices
-
Center gender free design
We are dedicated to finding textiles at the end of their life, and transforming them into new garments so that the quality and beauty of the material can be seen and enjoyed again. Our design world pulls from Eastern and Western textiles and identity. We design with gender free intention, both as a way to maximize the wearability of a garment and the time a garment is in the world.
Deconstructed Japanese Kimono silks and cottons from the Showa Era (1926-1989) are one of the main materials we work with. They are some of the most high quality and versatile materials in the world. They are at the same time elegant, luxurious, durable, and breathable and were originally made with zero waste patterns. We design with zero waste patterns, to honor this history and recognize eliminating waste as an important design intention.
*Solarpunk is a movement combining radical optimism with action to create the systems needed to put human life in balance with the Earth's Resources.
