Garment Care
TDLR: The fabrics used for this piece are historic in nature, and may have unique idiosyncrasies. We recommend spot cleaning, and hand washing cold and air drying. Color may transfer. This garment comes with free repairs.
Short history lesson: For centuries kimonos were washed only seasonally by specialists using a meticulous process. The garment is completely unstitched, sewn into a long roll, then hand-washed, pressed, and reassembled. This method preserves the textiles while allowing for subtle adjustments to extend the kimono’s life—a practice rooted in both craftsmanship, meticulous care, and sustainability.
Cleaning option 1 *our favorite* : airing your garment out between wearings and spot cleaning as necessary. Fill a spray bottle with vodka and spray gently from the inside of the garment in order to kill bacteria and remove odors. Using a steamer is another option to help keep pieces in good shape.
Cleaning option 2 *easier* : Hand wash in a basin with cold or room temp water, with a few drops of dish soap for 1-3 minutes. Pat dry to absorb water, lay flat to dry. Do not scrub! Iron/ steam to restore shape.
Cleaning option 3 *easiest* : toss in washing machine on cold. Wash alone. lay or hang dry. Color transfer may occur, especially with darker, or blue colors.
We do not recommend dry cleaning. hand washing is better than dry cleaning, both environmentally, and for the clothes.
