Waste Textiles

Issue: Textiles are accumulating in landfills due to our culture of discarding clothes and undervaluing their worth. Overproduction, basic design, and low-quality production contribute to this problem. This is where I get my bag guys I can talk to you about waste textiles for one hundred days.

Isaboko exclusively utilizes waste textiles that are on their way to landfill, including damaged and unconventional materials. The brand embraces the visible damage and lived use of these textiles, turning them into unique and desirable pieces. It aims to highlight the beauty and value of waste, promoting a shift towards degrowth and sustainability.

Textiles Used:
  • Isaboko repurposes various discarded textiles, such as old tablecloths, curtains, post-consumer clothing (e.g., men's shirting, jeans, t-shirts), ripped pantyhose, lost socks, cabin window cover tarps, expired climbing rope, seatbelts, handkerchiefs, damaged Japanese kimonos and obis, and South Asian kantha

Impact:
  • While diverting textiles from landfill is important, the true impact lies in inspiring consumers, viewers, designers, and other brands. Isaboko seeks to spark a chain reaction of rethinking waste textiles, demonstrating their value and encouraging others to do the same. The brand acknowledges that individual efforts alone have a limited impact, but collective inspiration can lead to a significant and transformative change.

Considerations on Deadstock Fabric:
  • Deadstock fabric, overproduced by brands and factories, is sometimes used as an alternative. However, there are concerns regarding transparency and questionable practices associated with deadstock. Isaboko aims to provoke thought on waste textiles specifically by utilizing damaged materials, even though deadstock could be more readily available.

Challenges and Solutions:
  • Establishing effective collecting systems for different types of waste textiles can be challenging. While thrifted waste can be easily sourced from thrift stores or fabric sorting facilities, other materials require contacting individuals outside the industry and investing time in searching for suitable options.

In summary, Isaboko's mission is to transform waste textiles into valuable and visually striking fashion pieces. By inspiring a change in mindset and creating awareness about the potential of damaged textiles, the brand aims to contribute to a larger movement towards sustainability in the fashion industry. In summary, Isaboko's mission is to transform waste textiles into valuable and visually striking fashion pieces.
